Overview

A Senior CWI works on high-visibility or mission critical aspects of the MRAP program and performs all functional duties independently. Oversees the efforts of Certified Welders and others perforing NDI testing, and is responsible for the efforts of all staff assigned to certified welding and/or NDT testing. 

Responsibilities

Inspects weld quality to ensure they pass visual inspection IAW the applicable AWS D1.1 Table 6.1 and titled “Quality of Welds, Visual Inspection.” Verify weld quality and workmanship to American Welding Society (AWS) D1.1. 

 

Investigate or resolve operational problems, such as material use variances or bottlenecks. 

Identify opportunities or implement changes to improve manufacturing processes or products or to reduce costs, using knowledge of fabrication processes, tooling and production equipment, assembly methods, quality control standards, or product design, materials and parts. Apply continuous improvement methods such as lean manufacturing to enhance manufacturing quality, reliability, or cost-effectiveness. Provide technical expertise or support related to manufacturing.

Qualifications

A Senior CWI will have 10+ years of experience in maintenance and welding, and a MA/MS degree [or 12 more years of experience if not MA/MS degree]. 

 

Certified Welding Inspectors (CWI) shall be certified IAW one or more of the following in addition to the requirements for CWs.

1. Certified in accordance with American Welding Society (AWS), Certified Welding Inspector (CWI), qualified and certified in accordance with provisions of AWS QC1, Standard for AWS Certified Welding Inspector; or
2. Welding inspectors qualified by the Canadian Welding Bureau (CWB) to Level II or the Level III requirements of the Canadian Standards Association Standard W 178.2 Certification of Welding Inspectors; or
3. AWS Certified Associate Welding Inspector under the supervision of a CWI or a CWB Level III; or A welding inspector certification program that is substantially the same as offered by AWS or CWB. In this case, the inspector certification program must be reviewed and approved by a government CWI or equivalent Quality Assurance representative prior to approval.

 

CWI shall be an experienced welder with AWS QC7 certification. Proficient in the Flux-Cord Arc Welding (FCAW) and Shielded Metal Arc Welding (SMAW) processes.

 

Ability to obtain & maintain a DoD security clearance required.
